May 18, RABBIS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS,  Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Executive Director,

Rabbis for Human Rights, Israel, Speaks in Seattle, Wed. May 18th, 7:30 PM, at

the Social Hall at Temple Beth 'Am.

Contact: Diane Baer, Temple Beth Am, Social Action Committee: (206) 782-2636

 Tom Buchanan, Temple Beth Am, Social Action Committee: (206) 3293839;

2632 80th St.NE (just East of 25thNE&80th).

Here's a recent sample of what RHR encounters in its activities:

In March, Rabbi Arik was convicted in Israel's Supreme Court for his civil

disobedience in blocking the bulldozers' demolition of Palestinian homes in

East Jerusalem.  On April 25, an RHR delegation to a West Bank village, and the

Palestinian farmers with whom they were working, were attacked by settlers from

Itamar, cursed, pushed and even beaten, with soldiers standing by idly.  On

April 28, the RHR delegation returned to the fields, and two Palestinian

farmers were chased away by settlers. But the delegation succeeded in helping quite

a few farmers gain access to their fields and orchards for the first time in

years.

Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) was founded in 1988 by Rabbi David

Foreman-who by coincidence is speaking at Temple D'Hirsch in Seattle, on Friday May

13th-and who does not ask "who is a Jew," but "how should a Jew behave?" Inspired

by Civil Rights and Anti-War movements in the United States led in part by

Abraham Joshua Heschel who marched with Martin Luther King in Selma in 1963 and

helped create 'Clergy and Laity Concerned about Vietnam" in 1967. Rabbi Foreman

asked, "Where are the Abraham Joshua Heschels in Israel?" RHR is the response

to that question.

Rabbi Arik will also speak on Israeli Women's Rights, the Crisis in the

Israeli Economic Budget, the continuing success of the Human Rights Yeshiva in

Jerusalem, among other topics.

May 19, RASHID KHALIDI. University of Washington. Arabic & Islamic Studies

featuring Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies, Columbia

University “Resurrecting Empire: American Policy in the Middle East

                                            Thursday, May 19th, 2005, 7:30

pm, 120 Kane Hall. In his lecture, Professor Khalidi examines the record of

Western involvement in the Middle East and analyzes the likely outcome of our most

recent incursions into the area.  Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of

the political and cultural history of an entire region, Rashid Khalidi paints a

chilling scenario of our present situation and yet offers a tangible

alternative that can help us find the path to peace rather than empire.

The Ziadeh Endowed Fund exists for the benefit of the University of

Washingtonís Arabic & Islamic Studies Program and serves to expand the educational and

cultural activities of Arabic language and literature and Islamic culture and

civilization.

OLYMPIA-RAFAH SISTER CITY PROJECT

Although Rachel Corrie’s life was cut short, many of us were inspired by her

and have resolved to carry out her project.  Beginning with a small core

group, we have steadily expanded since our formation last Spring.  A number of our

members have gone to live in Rafah, building connections with people and

institutions there.  We have begun a Fair Trade exchange for Palestinian artwork

through the Union of Palestinian Women, we support a Center for Disabled

Persons, we have sponsored cultural exchanges, and we offer translation between

English and Arabic for our pen-pal program.  You can find out more about us, or

contact us, through our website at http://www.orscp.org/.  (360) 867-0290 or via

email at tomwright59@comcast.net

RACHEL CORRIE REBUILDING CAMPAIGN IN GAZA

It has been two years since Rachel Corrie was killed and I need your help in

April to rebuild the home that Rachel stood to safeguard.  With your help, we

will start building in May --  just before the Gaza redeployment begins.  By

rebuilding the Nasrallah family's home this May, thousands of Americans and people

around the world will learn what is really going on in Gaza and throughout

the West Bank and Jerusalem.  House parties in the US with a live audio/video

link  bringing the Nasrallah family into your home, live from Gaza on April 21

(East coast) and April 22 (West coast).   Cindy and Craig Corrie will also be

joining the

link from Olympia, and it will be interactive, so your questions can be asked

and

answered. If interested in hosting a house party in April, or in more

information, please contact:  Donna Baranski-Walker, Director, p:  650 325-4663   f:
